In 2004, Kevin O'Rouke, an actor who was on the Board of Directors of RiverArts, was instrumental in spearheading an evening of staged readings of one-act plays. Working with actors and directors from the Rivertowns and beyond, O'Rouke and ensemble performed at the Hastings-on-Hudson Library.
2005's One-Act Play Marathon was held at the Hastings High School (HHS) and the ensemble grew to include dedicated members of the Thespian Society at HHS. The multi-generational melding of talent gave young playwrights and directors a chance to work with seasoned professionals.
In 2006, RiverArts and the Hastings Library presented a sneak peak at Hastings based playwright Richard Schotter's new play Sussman Variations directed by Kevin O'Rourke. A story of a family reunion on the Connecticut Coast, Schotter describes it as part intergenerational drama, part screwball comedy, part musical.
