This fall and winter students from the Dr. Kenneth Clark Academy will begin construction of a full-sized installation based on their models, which were completed last spring. Niall Cain, AIA, and RiverArts Outreach Chair, will conduct the workshop with faculty from the Academy at St. Christopher's in Dobbs Ferry.
The Architecture Workshop, led by architect, Niall Cain, introduces 15 students to the art and science of architecture and how it relates to their own experience.
RiverArts is grateful to have received significant support from Arts Westchester’s Arts Partners Challenge Program for this project. The Arts Partners program supports collaborations between artists, the community, arts organizations and public schools to expand access to arts education for young people. This combined effort supports the introduction of the vocabulary and creative process of architecture to special needs students, and guides them in designing and building their installations on the St. Christopher campus. The program was developed by Architect Niall Cain, of NcC Studio Architecture in Dobbs Ferry who conducts the workshops with faculty.
Niall's first workshop with Academy students developed as a tribute to activist and educator Kenneth C. Clark who used insightful sociological research to help create the groundbreaking legal architecture of Brown vs. Board of Education to end segregation in the schools. Niall will begin this spring to help students develop a theme and create a new plan for this year's project.
