Our artist for Spring 2010 is Edward Hopper (1882-1967), one of the most popular and revered artists in 20th Century American art.
Hopper’s paintings reflect the changes in American life at mid-century – automats, diners, movie palaces, offices and restaurants flourishing in our cities, as well as the motel rooms, gas stations, railroad tracks and highways that changed the face of the countryside. What makes Hooper’s art compelling are his lonely, isolated character who are deeply affected by “modern life.” The paintings transcend time, and continue to touch us deeply today.
Our art appreciation program Eyes on ART continues for another exciting year in the Rivertowns! Designed to enhance visual literacy in elementary school students, parent volunteers introduce a famous artist into the classroom twice during the school year and lead an open, interactive discussion of the artist’s work. An artist, theme or art movement is chosen as the focus for each class (two 40-minute sessions) based upon visual interest, historical value, and appropriateness for students. Current exhibitions and/or availability of an artist's work in nearby public collections often guide the selection, as this provides an opportunity for students to see original works of art. Over the course of the K-5 school years, students recognize the styles of many famous artists and develop the vocabulary to talk about them.
French Impressionist, Claude Monet is the artist for our fall presentation. Beginning with an early garden picture from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and ending with one of the artist's many studies of water lilies from Giverny, students will explore color and light in Monet's paintings, and learn why this artist was revolutionary in his time. (More here) Artists featured in previous years have included John Singer Sargent, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Cezanne, Wassily Kandinsky, and Winslow Homer and more.
Led by Hope Davis, an art professional with 30 years experience, the Eyes on ART program is now available to all Rivertown school districts through its affiliation with RiverArts. Based on the Famous Artists program originated in Rye in the mid-1980’s, Hope introduced the program to the Irvington School district five years ago where it has been a highlight of the district's PTSA.
